Mr. Owens is teaching Math and Science to Logic students and Forensic Science to Rhetoric Students. He loves to excite, captivate and challenge each of his students in all the experiments, discussions and worksheets that they do. According to Mr. Owens, “The goal is to have them leave with a clear understanding of God’s design and purpose, a desire to learn more, and an understanding of how math and science relates to them personally.” He believes in every student’s ability to learn, especially with hands-on participation.
Mr. Owens comes to Heritage Christian School with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from the University of Oregon. He has used his knowledge in Geology for work in Hydrology (fish hatchery), surveying, mapping, mining, and quarrying (drilling and blasting rock), in SE Alaska for many years and learned to do drilling and blasting from his Dad. In his previous life, Mr. Owens used his degree in Geology to help with the family business.
Prior to coming to Heritage, Mr. Owens used his love and knowledge of math and science to teach home school students grades 1st-12th. When he is not in the classroom, Mr. Owens tutors high school students in pre-algebra through pre-calculus and has taught math and science for several years in the Christian school environment.
Mr. Owens met his wife, Jean, through friends at the University of Oregon. They have been happily married for 25 years. They have three children, Matthew 20 years and a 2005 Heritage Christian graduate, Sarah, age 18 years attending Westview High School in their special needs classroom and Hannah, age 14, attending Heritage Christian in 9th grade.
In his spare time, Mr. Owens enjoys spending time with his family, going for walks and visiting friends. He loves to study about God’s creation and what scientists are discovering. He is a past-president of the NW Rett Syndrome Foundation where he and Jean are still active members. Their daughter, Sarah, has Rett Syndrome and is full care. Darrell has coached baseball, basketball, soccer and track and field. Many times you will find him attending a student’s game to cheer for them, as he loves watching the various sports! He is at home in the woods, hunting, hiking, fishing or teaching a class and making God’s creation real to his students and, he is an active gardener!
When it comes to church life, Mr. Owens has been a leader for 5-6th grade boys in the AWANA program at his church, Cedar Mill Bible, for the past 10 years. Mr. Owens is excited to teach at a Classical Christ-centered school because he appreciates being able to teach Biblical truth in science, in mathematics, and in life.
