A Profile for Success

We firmly believe that a typical student with a strong work ethic should be successful at Heritage Christian School. However, we also recognize that certain vulnerabilities may limit our ability to ensure that students prosper. We’ve put together a list of these vulnerabilities to help you determine whether or not Heritage Christian School is right for your child.

Students with any of the following significant vulnerabilities will be at risk for admission to Heritage Christian School. These vulnerabilities include:
  • Below average cognitive ability
  • Diagnosed learning disability
  • Disrespectful behavior towards peers or adults
  • Lack of motivation or negative attitude toward learning
  • Clinical emotional or social issues
  • Frequent or extended absenteeism
  • History of illegal substance use
The following are indicators that a student may be at risk for successfully completing their education at Heritage Christian School.
  • Any of the above vulnerabilities
  • Students who attend a grade that does not correlate with their age
  • Chronic illness
  • Below grade-level achievement in any of the basic skill areas
    (reading, mathematics, writing)
  • Depending on the needs of a particular student, teachers are willing to make certain accommodations. We will attempt to work with students:
    • Who have a willingness to work hard and seek help as needed,
    • Who have compensatory strengths and/or strategies to compensate for weaker areas, and
    • Whose families are committed to providing support for their child and to working with our faculty and administration.
Profile of Parents Suited for Heritage Christian School
We look for parents who want to make a commitment to our school community, who share Christian worldview values, and who are willing to communicate and work through problems openly and honestly. We need our parents to be accessible, open to further evaluation of their child, and willing to act on school recommendations made by faculty or outside professionals.
All conversations with teachers or other parents should be encouraging, reflect awareness of our partnership, and contribute to a positive school community. A parent's behavior may not be disruptive or injurious to the school or its reputation.

We ask that our parents trust our curriculum, our program choices, and the professionalism of our staff, and that they have patience and realistic expectations for their child in the learning process.
We seek parents who share our common goal of educating their child within a quality, Christian liberal arts program. Heritage Christian School believes that every student should receive the best education possible, one which will give tools which may be used in any future study, and which will enhance one’s ability to live life with reason and judgment. Regardless of the life work God later calls a student to pursue, he/she should be prepared through education to have a broad knowledge of many areas.

Student Profile for Success
This document articulates for prospective students and their families the qualities or characteristics most consistently found in successful Heritage Christian School students. We understand that people are constantly growing, changing, and developing. Therefore, this profile is offered not as an absolute, but as a guideline.

Intellectual Curiosity
Heritage Christian School upholds superior standards of academic excellence. We enable our students to become well grounded in academic content knowledge, to grow to intellectual maturity, to acquire skills of critical thinking, and to be prepared to continue on in higher education. At the logic/rhetoric school level, students should demonstrate sound abstract thinking skills, and strong verbal and receptive language skills.
We seek students who work for the sake of learning and not just for a reward or grade. A sincere desire to learn is an essential for admission. Academic achievement should be consistently on or above grade level. Successful Heritage students have a positive attitude, put forth their best effort and are willing to take risks. They actively participate in and contribute to classroom activities and strive to master organizational skills.

Faith
We seek students who are in the process of, or who are open to developing their faith in God. Heritage Christian School recognizes that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Our school community is built on biblical values that reveal God’s love for us and our need to love and care for our neighbor as ourselves. Emphasis is placed on essential beliefs of the Christian faith, not on those differences that separate denominations.

Responsibility
We seek students who demonstrate self-control, accept responsibility for their own actions, and behave respectfully, cooperatively and thoughtfully with others. Every individual has the right to be treated with respect and appreciated for his/her unique contributions to our school, community, and world. Respect for authority is expected and nurtured, just as those in authority treat students with respect. Student interactions are guided by respect for one another.

Respect
Respect demands responsibility. Each student is held accountable for his/her actions. The integrity of the individual, who must learn to discern and apply right from wrong, is reinforced and affirmed. Skills that develop self-control are taught to assist students in becoming industrious, maintaining a high moral standard, and achieving life goals. We appreciate students who are community-oriented and tolerant of and appreciate the various personalities, talents, and gifts found in our school community.
